It’s a loaded question. But it’s an important one. With all of the misinformation flying around I felt it necessary to touch this topic. There are misconceptions surrounding holistic medicine. That’s why I am here to define, compare and contrast, and provide examples of holistic medicine; as well as touch on some controversies…
Definition
Holistic medicine focuses on treating the whole individual. It takes into account physical, mental, social, familial, and spiritual health. This approach focuses on each individual’s unique needs.
Holistic medicine incorporates traditional and natural therapies. It’s focus is on healing the body from within.

Compare and Contrast
Western/Modern | Naturopathic | Holistic |
Diagnose and treat | Prevent and treat w natural remedies | Prevent, diagnose, and treat individual |
Medications, surgery | Herbs, supplements | Medication, surgery, natural remedies |
MD/DO | Naturopathic training | MD/DO |
The Controversy
As you can see holistic medicine is not drastically different from western/modern medicine. Rather it is a mix of naturopathic and modern medicine. It is important to note there are some serious gaps and concerns when we start talking naturopathic medicine.
Modern medicine has profoundly impacted and benefited our society as a whole. Life expectancy has increased. We have highly effective treatments and cures for many disease states. Diseases have even been eradicated.

When considering medical treatment it is not only about medication or surgery. Many treatment guidelines include lifestyle modifications. So why has this become a war on modern medicine vs natural therapies? Modern medicine acknowledges and encourages lifestyle modifications and overall health. Why does a set of beliefs have to be so extreme that it’s all or nothing? I can’t make that make sense, if you know what I mean.
In Conclusion
A holistic approach may include: exercise, diet, genetics, socials, preventative care, and treatment. Modern medicine and lifestyle are included in a treatment plan. Holistic medicine is not an extreme form but rather a whole approach. In fact, I will say, a holistic approach is prudent to lead a long healthy life.
