Everyone wants to know: what’s the secret to living a long, healthy life? Otherwise known as longevity. I have previously discussed the “Power 9” (9 common factors across areas with longer life expectancies)**. And now I am wondering, should there be a #10 on this list? In this week’s post I am talking about the proposed longevity benefits of stretching and maintaining flexibility.

Stretching Benefits
- Prevent injury
- Reduce pain
- Increase mobility
- Improve posture
- Relieve stress
- Better mental health
- Boost recovery
- Improve circulation
- Increase muscle strength and power
- Decrease risk of several chronic diseases
Is There Any Literature?
A study published in August 2024 found an association with increased flexibility and decreased natural-cause mortality in middle aged men and women1.
Now, is it flexibility vs overall health? I am not sure. But it does seem individuals who stretch are more likely to be physically fit and healthy.
How To Stretch

Stretching is elongating designated muscle groups. Holding for >30 seconds helps to increase flexibility.
- Active stretch pre workout
- Static stretch post workout
- Be consistent
- Push yourself, but not to the point of physical pain
- Stretch on rest days
In Conclusion
There are many health benefits of stretching. It’s close to earning a spot at #10 on the longevity list. Increasing your flexibility may equate to improved overall health and thus a longer, healthier life. To me it’s a no brainer: everyone should stretch. And it’s never too late to start.
As always, reach out with questions, comments, or for further discussion.

I feel wonderful after I have done my stretches! I will soon be 84 years young.

84 years young and strong! Happy almost birthday! <3
Good reminder! Life is busy but slowing down to stretch makes so much sense. Our brains need regular exercise too. That’s another area I’m guilty of “skipping.” Make time to learn something new! Challenge those brain cells.
It’s too easy to skip. But always worth taking the time. Great hearing from you Jenny <3
